Tooth injuries are common in both children and adults. About seventeen percent of children will experience a dental injury by the time they are eighteen years old. Most of these injuries will involve chips, cracks, or fractures, but occasionally a tooth will be knocked out. A knocked out tooth is a serious dental emergency. If you have knocked out a tooth, a speedy reaction is critical. Call our dentist as soon as possible to schedule a visit to our office. The faster you can see us, the more likely it is that we will be able to save the tooth.
You cannot treat a knocked out tooth at home. However, proper first aid can help until you can be professionally treated. If your tooth has been knocked out, follow these guidelines to improve the odds of saving the tooth.
- Do not touch the root of the tooth
Handle it only by the crown, or the part of the tooth that is visible above the gum line.
- Replace the tooth in its socket, if possible
If the tooth is dirty, rinse it carefully, but do not use soap, chemical cleaners, cloths, or toothbrushes. Place the tooth gently in the socket. If it does not easily go back in, do not force it. You can also carefully reposition it above the socket and gently bite down.
- If the tooth does not fit into its socket, store it safely
Teeth must be stored properly for the best chances of preservation. A tooth preservation kit can be purchased at a drugstore, but you can also use a glass of milk or your saliva. Do not use tap water to store a knocked out tooth.
A tooth that is replaced in its socket can often reattach. It may need to be splinted to neighboring teeth to ensure it does so properly. It will also likely need root canal therapy. However, if the tooth is re-implanted soon enough after the accident, the odds of success are fairly high. In some cases, the tooth will not be able to be saved. Our emergency dentist may recommend replacing it with a dental implant, which closely resembles a natural tooth.

Now I Can Smile Again!
The dentist just made my front teeth/smile look like I had veneers implanted! She took away all my dark spots and heading without crowns and painful implants. It looks amazing! Thank You 🙂
The dentist was very kind + caring. Highly recommend! I only had a few days left on my dental insurance + she helped to prioritize my care + fit me in so that I could get issues taken care of in a pinch. The office manager, couldn't have been sweeter + she helped me to understand the sometimes tricky insurance pieces + actual prices I'd be paying before I made any decisions. A+ experience.
