Healthy gums should be pink, firm, and tight around your teeth. These tissues help support your teeth in their bony sockets, and although they are strong and resilient, they can be damaged by oral bacteria. The bacteria secrete toxic substances that inflame, irritate, and infect gum tissues. One of the first symptoms of gum disease is gum swelling. If you notice swelling or puffiness in your gums, call our dental office right away. We can schedule an appointment to evaluate your oral health and determine the cause of the problem.
Gum swelling is most commonly associated with gum disease. Gum disease affects about half of Americans. Other symptoms can include redness, inflammation, tissue that appears to be pulling away from teeth, chronic bad breath, heavy plaque and tartar buildup, a bad taste in the mouth, and pus along the gum line. In advanced cases, your teeth may feel loose, and your bite may feel different. However, while gum disease is the most common cause of swollen gums, it is not the only cause. Other factors can also contribute to swollen gums, including:
- Poor nutrition, including inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption
- Allergic reaction to ingredients in toothpaste or mouthwash
- Medication side effects
- Tooth infections
Because there is no single cause for gum swelling, an evaluation is essential to ensuring an accurate diagnosis and getting the relief you need.
To prevent swollen gums, brush and floss regularly, and eat a balanced diet. Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash. If your gums are currently swollen, use a salt water solution, which can help combat inflammation and relieve discomfort.
Treatment will vary based on the cause of the swelling. If you are suffering from gum disease, our dentist may recommend a deep cleaning treatment called a scaling and root planing to remove the source of the infection so your gums can heal. Advanced cases of gum disease may need more extensive treatments. If you have an abscessed tooth causing localized swelling, you might need a root canal treatment to remove the infected tissue so the tooth can heal.
The right treatment will provide you with relief and improve your oral health. Call our dental office today to learn more about gum swelling treatments or to schedule your appointment with our periodontist.

Now I Can Smile Again!
The dentist just made my front teeth/smile look like I had veneers implanted! She took away all my dark spots and heading without crowns and painful implants. It looks amazing! Thank You 🙂
The dentist was very kind + caring. Highly recommend! I only had a few days left on my dental insurance + she helped to prioritize my care + fit me in so that I could get issues taken care of in a pinch. The office manager, couldn't have been sweeter + she helped me to understand the sometimes tricky insurance pieces + actual prices I'd be paying before I made any decisions. A+ experience.
