Bleeding gums are a common problem that affects about half of Americans. Gums are the connective tissues that surround and support teeth in their bony sockets. Bleeding in the gum tissue is most commonly caused by gum disease, an infection that is associated with oral bacteria. If you have gum bleeding, it is time to call our dentist. We can schedule a complete periodontal evaluation to determine the underlying cause and create a treatment plan to restore your oral health.
Gum disease is caused by plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky, colorless biofilm that contains bacteria that release irritating toxins. Brushing and flossing regularly prevents plaque and bacteria from damaging your teeth or gums, but plaque can build up in hard-to-reach areas in the back of your mouth and along the gum line. This can lead to gum inflammation and bleeding. Gum bleeding can also be caused by:
- Hormonal changes
Female hormones can increase blood flow to the gum tissue and cause increased sensitivity to oral bacteria. You may notice increased bleeding around puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. Better dental hygiene can help combat the bleeding and reduce your risk of gum disease.
- Aggressive dental hygiene routine
Brushing too hard or flossing too aggressively can damage delicate gum tissue, which also leads to bleeding. Being enthusiastic about dental hygiene is a good thing, but you need to use the right techniques and tools. For the best results, use a light touch and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss carefully to avoid cutting your gums.
- Certain medications
Medications such as blood thinners can make your gums more susceptible to bleeding.
Treatments for gum bleeding will vary based on the cause of the bleeding. A deep cleaning may be recommended if you are diagnosed with gum disease. A deep cleaning procedure, also called scaling and root planing, removes the plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, including the roots below the gum line. In some cases, more extensive treatments may be necessary to control the spread of the infection and restore gum health. These can include antimicrobial treatments and surgical therapies.

Now I Can Smile Again!
The dentist just made my front teeth/smile look like I had veneers implanted! She took away all my dark spots and heading without crowns and painful implants. It looks amazing! Thank You 🙂
The dentist was very kind + caring. Highly recommend! I only had a few days left on my dental insurance + she helped to prioritize my care + fit me in so that I could get issues taken care of in a pinch. The office manager, couldn't have been sweeter + she helped me to understand the sometimes tricky insurance pieces + actual prices I'd be paying before I made any decisions. A+ experience.
